Application for the NZ Writer in Residence
The Randell Cottage Creative NZ Writer in Residence is selected by a Trust-appointed committee to work on an approved project from April to October each year. The deadline for applications is in early November of the previous year, with the successful applicant announced in December. Note, the residency is always subject to Creative NZ Funding which is currently confirmed by April each year. The French writer is selected by the French Government and the NZ-France Friendship Fund to work on an approved project from November to March each year, and applications need to be made through the French Government.
Rent-free accommodation in the two-bedroom central city cottage, a monthly stipend of approximately $2,500 funded by Creative New Zealand.
Applicants must be New Zealand citizens by birth, registration, or residency.
Applicants should be writers whose work has already been published and well received.
The project proposal the writer submits may be in any genre, including:
Fiction
Poetry
Children's writing
Drama
Biography
Other literary non-fiction
Writing on arts topics
The following persons are not eligible for selection as the Resident Writer:
Employees of Creative New Zealand.
Members of the Arts Council, The Arts Board, Te Waka Toi
and the Pacific Arts Committee.
Students of tertiary institutions working towards the completion of a tertiary qualification.
What will the selection panel consider when awarding the residency?
Major factors in making the selection will be the literary achievement of the applicant to date, and the ability to produce a work of substantial literary quality.
The Trustees and their advisers will make the final selection.
The successful applicant will be advised in December of the year of application.
The Trust will arrange a formal public announcement.
The writer will be expected to participate in any associated social activities and be prepared to promote the Trust and the residency at every opportunity.
They will also be required to include a printed acknowledgment of the Trust and Creative New Zealand in any published work that results from holding the residency.
Within one month of completing the residency, the writer will provide a report on progress with their project, including any comments on the residency itself.
Applicants should complete the attached application form and post, together with a literary CV, self-addressed stamped envelope, a detailed project proposal and up to ten pages of work in progress, to:
