Funders
Wellington City Council
Wellington City Council provides three-year Contract Funding which contributes towards the non-discretionary operational costs (such as rates, insurance, and routine maintenance) of running a writer’s residency and maintaining a heritage building.
New Zealand France Friendship Fund
The New Zealand France Friendship Fund was established in 1991 with the aim of promoting friendly relations between France and New Zealand. It sought to enhance the bilateral relationship by providing financial support for cultural, community, scientific and educational projects. In 2016, the NZFFF established a legacy fund, managed by the Arts Foundation of New Zealand, enabling the Randell Cottage French residency to be funded in perpetuity.
Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa
Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa took part in joint discussions in 2001 that endorsed the establishment of Randell Cottage as a residence for New Zealand writers. From 2002 to 2024, on a regularly contestable basis, it funded the Creative New Zealand Writing Fellowship, which provided a stipend for successive writers-in-residence. In 2025, however, the Trust's application for the 2025–2027 period was unsuccessful, with Creative New Zealand citing funding constraints.

The French Embassy manages the annual selection of the French writer and, in association with branches of the Alliance Française throughout New Zealand, runs the writer’s public programme.
The Arts Foundation of New Zealand, launched in 2000, is a private charitable trust founded by New Zealand arts patrons with the aim of establishing a large endowment fund capable of providing significant and ongoing support to New Zealand artists. The Arts Foundation manages the endowment created by the New Zealand France Friendship Fund to fund the French residency in perpetuity.
The National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa and the Alliance Française de Wellington, help us host our writer’s public engagements in Wellington. The National Library sessions are recorded and held in the Oral History Archive of the Turnbull Library.
The Alexander Turnbull Library in Wellington supports the work of the Randell Cottage Writers Trust by purchasing the videos it commissions of successive New Zealand writers-in-residence. This material remains in the ownership of the Trust but can be made available as a research resource to New Zealanders and the wider internarial community.
